Ingredients
- 1 cup pressed rice
- 2 tablespoon chopped cashews
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoon chopped almonds
- 1/2 litre milk
- 2 tablespoon ghee
Directions
How to make Poha Modak
- Step 1 Chop the nuts
Chop the almonds and cashews into small bits.
- Step 2 Roast the nuts
Heat ghee in a pan. Add chopped almonds and cashews. Mix and roast them for 2-3 minutes or until fragrant. Take out the roasted nuts in a bowl.
- Step 3 Roast the poha
Heat ghee in a pan. Add poha and toss well. Stir continuously and roast the poha till its colour changes from white to golden. Take out the poha in a bowl and let it cool down.
- Step 4 Grind the poha
Add the poha to a grinder. Blend to form a fine powder.
- Step 5 Boil the milk
Pour milk into a pan and keep it on high heat. Once it comes to a boil, lower the flame to medium-high. Boil the milk till it reduces to half its quantity. Give a stir after every 2 minutes to prevent the milk from burning and sticking at the bottom.
- Step 6 Mix in sugar
Once the milk reduces to half its quantity, add sugar and mix till it dissolves completely.
- Step 7 Add powdered poha
Now add powdered poha to the pan along with roasted nuts. Mix and cook till the mixture comes together and leaves the sides of the pan.
- Step 8 Make modaks from the mixture
Let the mixture cool down a bit. Now grease a modak mould with a few drops of ghee. Fill the mould with the mixture and press down to make a modak. Make more such modaks with the leftover mixture.
- Step 9 Ready to be served
Your Poha Modaks are now ready to be served. Enjoy!
To add aroma and flavour to the modaks, you can add a few strands of saffron while boiling the milk.
